Recent MSU Football commit Reggie Powers first domino in big recruiting month for Spartans

Michigan State is in need of a big June on the recruiting trail, and this Midwest commit has gotten the ball rolling for the Spartans...

Three-star Dayton (Ohio) Centerville safety Reggie Powers III has committed to the Spartans just days after taking his official visit to East Lansing. Head coach Mel Tucker and staff have made a strong impression as of late in this recruitment, as Powers was once an Ohio State lean.

Powers chose Michigan State over Ohio State, Northwestern, Cincinnati, and Pittsburgh. Rated the No. 580 player nationally by 247Sports Composite, he is the Spartans’ first high school commit since April. Should Powers sign with MSU this December, he’d also be the first recruit from Ohio to sign with the Spartans since the 2021 recruiting class.

Powers is a fast and hard hitting safety. During a breakout junior season he recorded 80 tackles, 10 pass break ups and four forced fumbles.

Landing a verbal pledge from Powers reflects on how well Michigan State has done on the recruiting trail so far this June. The Spartans currently have one of the smallest classes for the 2024 cycle so far, but this is a quality pickup. Powers’ commitment also shows Tucker and his staff are putting a strong effort into recruiting Ohio again, after mostly avoiding the state through much of the head coach’s tenure in East Lansing.

Safeties coach Harlon Barnett has landed some quality safeties that have flown under the radar the past. There is a growing belief among Michigan State’s staff and players that former three-star defensive back prospect and current sophomore safety Malik Spencer is due for a breakout 2024 season. Can Powers be the next in line?

He was the first domino to fall for Michigan State’s recruiting efforts this June. Other targets on the Spartans’ board have set commitment dates that are coming up soon, and MSU could be adding to the 2024 class soon.
