Halftime Observations: Offense Starts Fast, Bengals Lead Chiefs 17-13
CINCINNATI — The Bengals' season is on the line and they played like it in the first half of Sunday's game against the Chiefs. Cincinnati has a 17-13 lead at the half.
Here are our halftime observations:
Fast Start
The Bengals' offense scored on their first three possessions. Jake Browning completed 10-of-13 passes for 98 yards and one touchdown over that span. He also ran for 32 yards and one score.
He started 4-for-4 on third down passes, which included big conversions to Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins.
The Bengals had to punt on their fourth possession, but 17 first half points is exactly what the doctor ordered for Zac Taylor, Brian Callahan and company.
Ja'Marr Chase's Impact
Chase only has one catch for 24 yards, but his impact has been felt. The Chiefs were clearly fired up to play him after his comments this week.
Chase got involved in a skirmish with multiple Chiefs defensive backs. There were offsetting penalties. The star receiver drew a pass interference penalty on L'Jarius Snead in the end zone a few plays later.
The Bengals would go on to score a touchdown to take a 17-7 lead.
Bend, But Don't Break
Lou Anarumo's defense struggled in the first half. The Chiefs moved the ball up and down the field and scored on three of their four possessions. Cincinnati forced them to kick field goals on two of their drives and also forced a Patrick Mahomes fumble that put the offense in position for their second touchdown of the game.
Cincinnati has given up multiple big plays, but they've gotten off the field in key moments.
Key Injury
Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins suffered a hamstring injury in the first quarter and hasn't returned to the game. He has one catch for 19 yards.
The Bengals Will Win If...
The Chiefs will get the ball to start the second half. Anarumo's defense needs to grab momentum by getting a stop. They've given up multiple big runs and explosive plays to Isiah Pacheco. He has 88 rushing yards on just five attempts. He also has 35 receiving yards.
They need to limit the explosive plays in the second half. Browning and the offense have to continue to do what they've done. Move the ball with a nice balance of rushing and passing. They'll likely have to throw the ball downfield more in the second half.
Chase will be more involved. They'll also need Tyler Boyd to step up and make plays.
The Bengals will likely need to force two more turnovers to win the game. The offense needs to find a way to produce a few explosive plays. If they do that, they'll have a good shot at beating the Chiefs.
