NFL free agency incites excitement from every team's fanbase. The thought of getting a new name is always interesting to think about. What is less exhilarating, but perhaps more important, is retaining talent already on the team.

The Indianapolis Colts have done this with several players up to this point, and defensive end Genard Avery can join that list.

NFL Insider Adam Schefter posted on X:

"Pass rusher Genard Avery is returning to the Indianapolis Colts on a one-year deal."

Avery isn't the massive news like Michael Pittman Jr., Zaire Franklin, Kenny Moore II, and Grover Stewart were, but, similar to Tyquan Lewis finding another contract, this is for depth purposes, ensuring that the Colts have pass-rushers available all over the roster. Avery's had a career that has spanned stints with the Cleveland Browns (2018-2019), Philadelphia Eagles (2019-2021), and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2022).

Avery's season with Indianapolis never got started, as he suffered an LCL/meniscus injury that forced season-ending surgery. The Colts must believe there's something to showcase with Avery by giving him another contract. Could it be the new addition of defensive line coach Charlie Partridge? There are many reasons why Indy feels Avery is worth it. If he can stay healthy, there's a good chance he sees snaps on the field.

So far in six NFL seasons, Avery has 17 games started, 106 tackles (12 for loss), 29 quarterback hits, 8.5 sacks, and 5 passes defended. Avery, like Lewis, will get another shot to shine for the Colts despite a bad injury. It paid off for Indy by keeping Lewis in 2023, so there's the possibility that it can with Avery, as well.
