Jaguars Podcast: Breaking Down the Ryan Nielsen Hire

What do John and Gus make of the Jacksonville Jaguars newest defensive coordinator?

The Jacksonville Jaguars have a new voice leading their defense.

The Jaguars officially hired former Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen on Monday, ending a two-week search.

"We're excited to welcome Ryan and have him lead our defense moving forward," said Jaguars Head Coach Doug Pederson.

"Ryan is an outstanding football coach and his defenses with the Falcons and Saints were always fundamentally sound in both their physicality and concepts. He has the rare ability to both teach and connect with his players. He builds lasting, two-way relationships predicated on trust. He establishes accountability, first from himself, then the players. What I've most admired about Ryan's defenses -- and we saw this in London back in October -- was their shared intensity and enthusiasm to get the job done and impact the game."

But what could the Nielsen hire mean for the Jaguars as they move into the 2024 offseason? How have the team needs now changed after their transformation to Nielsen's scheme from Mike Caldwell's? And what overall does Nielsen bring to the table that should have the Jaguars feeling optimistic about their defense after the way the 2023 season ended?

John and Gus discuss all of this and more in this week's episode of the Jaguar Report podcast.
