The Duval Devout had plenty to watch in their Jacksonville Jaguars battling to stay at the top of the AFC South against the Carolina Panthers. However, edge rusher Josh Allen added an extra gem by breaking the franchise single-season sack record with his three sacks bringing him to 16.5. The previous mark was held by Calais Campbell who earned 14.5 in 2017.

Over and above this accolade, Allen’s performance has been a factor for the Jaguars' defense throughout the season as an essential element that has kept his squad in the playoff hunt despite a myriad of injuries on both sides of the ball.

Allen’s resetting of the sack milestone comes after a three-game drought without getting to the quarterback. The prospect of breaking the record appears to be something that drove him potentially to a fault.

“I think about it too much”, said Allen the Monday after the Jags’ home loss to the Ravens. “. . . I’ve got to stop thinking about it, just go out there and play football”.

For all the pressure that he put on himself, Allen coming out for a 5th game in 2023 with two or more sacks has helped his team even beyond the shutout win over the Panthers.

His presence in 2023 has helped lift this squad as among the top in takeaways in 2023 with 26 and assisted Travon Walker to more than double his sack total from his rookie season as an NFL sophomore. Walker has taken advantage of the attention Allen draws by not only recording nine sacks on the year but also turning in his first game with two or more against the Panthers.
