Toronto Argonauts Sign Former Star College Return Specialist Savon Scarver

The departure of 2023 Most Outstanding Special Teams returner Javon Leake in free agency has opened the door for competition, including recent Toronto Argonauts signee Savon Scarver.

The Toronto Argonauts signed former star college return specialist and wide receiver Savon Scarver.

The former Utah State Aggies standout set records in college as a prolific kick returner. Scarver averaged 27.4 yards on kick returns with an NCAA record-tying seven touchdowns, setting a conference and school record.

Scarver, a 25-year-old Las Vegas native, was a consensus All-American in 2018 and first team All-Mountain West in 2018 and 2019. He was honored with the Jet Award in 2018, awarded to the nation's top college return specialist.

The Jet Award, named in honor of Heisman Trophy winner and former CFL superstar Johnny "The Jet" Rodgers, has been awarded since the 2011 season. Some of the recognizable names who have received that honor over the last decade are Christian McCaffrey, Tavon Austin, Tyler Lockett, Adoree Jackson and Ty Montgomery.

Since turning pro in 2022, the 5-11, 175-pound receiver has spent time with the Chicago Bears and, most recently, the Ottawa Redblacks, primarily on their practice squad.

Scarver did finally see some action last year, appearing in five games and registering seven receptions, along with three punt returns.

His signing follows the departure of 2023 Most Outstanding Special Teams returner Javon Leake in free agency, which left the door open for competition at that pivotal role when Argonauts camp arrives in May.

It's been a while since Savon Scarver shined as bright as he did when he donned blue as an Aggie, but he might get a chance to rekindle that magic in Double Blue as an Argo.
