New Auburn Tiger Transfer Gets High Praise From Defensive Coach

The Auburn football coaching staff has a lot of faith in a new transfer.

The Auburn Tigers added some high-end talent in the defensive backfield during December's transfer portal window and his name should be called early.

The Tigers lost a ton of talent in the defensive back room this past season. That didn't stop Auburn cornerbacks coach Wesley McGriff from speaking highly when he was asked about the newest member of Auburn's cornerback room.

Antonio Kite left Alabama entered the transfer portal during the portal window and ultimately picked the Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers. The coaching staff likes what they've seen from him early.

“When you have a guy that changes location, changes jobs, his whole world is turned upside down," McGriff said to local media on Wednesday. "They are sleeping at a different place, eating different food, around different people, but he’s showing a lot of bright spots with his skill set and talent. He’s very knowledgeable. He’s smarter than advertised. I’m excited to see him put it all together and take off. I’m certain he’ll help us and give us a shot in the arm this year.”

Kite, the 6-foot-1, 182-pound defensive back, joins a cornerback room led by Keionte Scott and Kayin Lee. Scott made the move from nickel to corner before Auburn's bowl game against Maryland. Lee saw real playing time as a true freshman last season as the third cornerback on the roster behind DJ James and Nehemiah Pritchett.

Kite is expected to compete for a top cornerback spot in DJ Durkin's defense this season.

Kite played in three games at Alabama last season for a total of 22 snaps.
