Bears Long Jumper Pettway Takes Home All-America Honors

Baylor senior only fifth in program history to cross 21-foot mark

Caira Pettway, a senior for the Big 12's Baylor Bears track and field team, became only the fifth long jumper in program history to cross the 21-foot mark.

She did so on her sixth attempt on Thursday night, June 9, in a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Track & Field Championship in Eugene, Oregon.

The senior long jumper also took home All-America honors.

"@caira_pettway has a little less shelf space after today," Baylor Track & Field tweeted late Thursday night after Pettway took home the honors.

In addition to the senior's strong finish, Baylor's Aaliyah Miller finished third in her heat in the 800 meters to qualify for the finals.

"BOOK IT! Aaliyah Miller gets a finals-qualifying mark of 2:03:05 in the 800 meters after finishing seventh overall!" Baylor Track & Field tweeted "She'll run Saturday at 5:44 p.m. CT."

Sophomore Kavia Francis, meanwhile, will also be competing this weekend after becoming the first Bears 400-meter finalist in 16 years.

"How about a new PROGRAM RECORD for Kavia Francis in the 400?!" Baylor Track & Field tweeted "She improves her collegiate PR to 51.17s."

The official Twitter page for Baylor Track & Field later sent out a tweet congratulating the sophomore for moving on to the finals.

"The final results are in and Kavia advances to the national finals on Saturday at 5:32 p.m. CT!"
