OC Jeff Grimes Reveals Why Blake Shapen is Baylor's Starting QB

'Consistency' one of the main reason's Blake Shapen won starting job over Gerry Bohanon

Redshirt sophomore Blake Shapen was named the starting quarterback for the Baylor football team by coach Dave Aranda following spring practice earlier this year, leading to former starter Gerry Bohanon bolting for USF as the Bears embark upon the 2022 college football season.

Jeff Grimes, Baylor's offensive coordinator, recently spoke about Shapen being named the starter in an interview on SiriusXM Radio.

"I love both these guys; I really do," Grimes said. "I love Gerry, and I wish him nothing but the best and have still been in touch with him, but I think Blake just threw the ball more consistently. And I feel like for us to take the next step as an offense, we've got to throw the ball better."

Last season for the Bears, Shapen appeared in six games (starting two), garnering 596 passing yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions.

"We ran it well this year and that was a good start, but we didn't throw it as well as we needed to in order to create the kind of balance that I really want on offense."

Prior to his time donning green and gold, Shapen was the No. 21-ranked dual-quarterback in the 2020 signing class and was also ranked as the No. 1 shortstop in Louisiana.

Shapen and the Bears kick off the 2022 season against Albany at McLane Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. Central Time.
