Former Baylor QB Kyron Drones Commits to Virginia Tech

The former four-star from Alvin Shadow Creek is expected to start for the Hokies, who went 3-9.

Former Baylor Bears quarterback Kyron Drones is transferring to Virginia Tech, he announced Monday.

Drones, a former four-star recruit, was rated one of the best quarterback prospects in the country after leading Alvin Shadow Creek to a 37-5 record – and its first-ever state championship – in three seasons as a starter. At Shadow Creek, Drones passed for 5,257 yards, 71 touchdowns, and 17 interceptions, and tacked on another 1,300 yards and 23 touchdowns on the ground.

But despite his blue-chip pedigree, Drones never took hold of the starting job at Baylor. Even as starter Blake Shapen struggled through the second half of the season, throwing more interceptions (seven) than touchdowns (five) through the final six games, Drones remained on the bench.

While at Baylor, Drones completed 14 of 23 passes for 219 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He also rushed eight times for 49 yards and two scores.

Drones is expected to compete for the starting job at Virginia Tech, a team that finished 3-8 and scored just 19.3 points per game (118th in the country). Current starting quarterback Grant Wells, himself a transfer from Marshall, completed 59 percent of his passes for 2,171 yards, nine touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Baylor will likely be searching for an experienced quarterback in the transfer portal, with Shapen and incoming freshman Austin Novosad the only scholarship signal-callers on the roster. The top veterans in the portal with Texas ties include Texas quarterback Hudson Card (Austin Lake Travis), Arkansas quarterback Malik Hornsby (Missouri City) and Oklahoma State quarterback Spencer Sanders (Denton Ryan).
