'Only Option': Ex Baylor WR Denzel Mims Requests Trade from Jets

Mims' agent released a statement Thursday informing the Jets of the receiver's trade intentions.

Former Baylor Bears standout and New York Jets receiver Denzel Mims has requested a trade from the team, per a statement released Thursday by his agent Ron Slavin on behalf of the 24-year-old.

"Denzel tried in good faith but it's clear he does not have a future with the Jets," Slavin's statement read. "We feel at this point a trade is our only option, since the Jets have told us repeatedly they will not release him."

The full statement can be read below:

Mims was a second-round pick by New York in 2020, but hasn't live up those expectations in two seasons with the team. In 20 total games, he's posted 31 receptions for 490 yards and no touchdowns.

Last season, he appeared in 10 games for the 4-13 Jets, but totaled just eight catches for 23 yards in a receiving room that featured rookie standout Elijah Moore, Corey Davis, Jamison Crowder, Keelan Cole, Braxton Berrios.

Things got more crowded this offseason, as the team drafted Ohio State rookie Garrett Wilson as Cole and Crowder departed. This has clouded Mims' offensive outlook headed into his third season in a Jets offense that averaged the fifth-fewest points per game (18.2) last season.

In four seasons with Baylor, Mims rose to become one of the best receivers in program history. He totaled 186 catches for 2,925 yards and 28 touchdowns. In the all-time program ranks, he currently has the sixth-most receiving yards, the fifth-most catches, and the third-most touchdown receptions.
