Star Safety DJ Coleman Signs With Baylor Bears

Coleman, an in-state three-star prospect from Mesquite Horn, adds depth to a safety room that lost starter Devin Neal to Louisville.

After committing to Baylor in June, three-star safety DJ Coleman signed with the Bears on National Signing Day Wednesday.

Coleman, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound prospect out of Mesquite Horn (TX), chose Baylor over offers from Florida State, Navy and UTSA, among others. He’s expected to play as a true deep safety.

Coleman was a standout player at Horn, racking up 72 tackles, 10.5 tackles for loss, five pass deflections and four blocked punts while leading the Jaguars to their first eight-win season since 2017. Between his junior and senior years, he forced four fumbles and recovered three.

He also excels at track and field, running a 22.72 200-meter dash and long jumping 19-0.5. He also ran in Horn’s 4x100 and 4x200-meter relays.

Coleman joins a recruiting class heavy on defensive back talent. Heading into National Signing Day, Coleman joined Tay’Shawn Wilson (Houston Mayde Creek, TX), LeVar Thornton Jr (Keller Timber Creek, TX), Carl Williams IV (Baton Rouge Southern Lab, LA) and Caden Jenkins (Lewisville, TX) as defensive backs committed to Baylor. Coleman was the only player listed at safety.

Baylor’s defensive backfield under Dave Aranda has featured star safeties such as Jalen Pitre and JT Woods, both of whom were high draft picks. But with starter Devin Neal transferring to Louisville, and the team’s interception totals at their lowest since 2018, the Bears could use another athletic playmaker in the back seven.

Before the signing window opened on Wednesday, Baylor’s recruiting class was ranked No. 25 in the 247 Sports Composite rankings. That’s third-best among new Big 12 teams, behind only TCU (No. 18) and Texas Tech (No. 24).
