The Boise State men’s basketball team returns to the court on Friday to take on UNLV in Mountain West play.
Tipoff between the Broncos (15-9, 7-6) and Rebels (12-12, 7-6) is scheduled for 8 p.m. Mountain time at ExtraMile Arena.
Boise State received a midweek bye following a 91-90 road victory over New Mexico last weekend. The Broncos are 6-1 over their last seven games entering Friday’s rematch with UNLV.
“I think it was much-needed,” Boise State head coach Leon Rice said of the mini-bye. “Because of the grind of the season and the travel and all the stuff you have to do, and the game after game after game … that’s cumulative. But probably the most important thing is we had a lot of sick guys.”
Starting guard RJ Keene II missed the New Mexico game due to illness. Forward Andrew Meadow was listed as questionable but played through illness.
“Then it spread to a few more guys, so we were really fortunate to have some time off to get everybody healthy and get everybody back on the court,” Rice said.
UNLV is coming off consecutive home victories over Grand Canyon (15-9, 8-5) and San Jose State (6-18, 1-12). The Lopes are 2-0 against Boise State this season.
Back in mid-January, the Rebels took down the Broncos in overtime at Thomas & Mack Center, 89-85. UNLV junior guard Dra Gibbs-Lawhorn dominated the game with 33 points, six assists and five rebounds.
“They’re a really, really talented team,” Rice said of the Rebels. “When you watch them on film, you’re like ‘Holy cow!’ They have a lot of those moments where you’re like ‘Wow.’ You saw those (during the first meeting). That play they made at the end of the game to block (Aginaldo Neto’s) shot, there’s not many players in the country who could’ve made that play. When you slowed it down and looked at it, you were even more amazed at it.
“That’s kind of who they are. They have a lot of great athletes, a lot of great players.”
Gibbs-Lawhorn averages 18.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists.
Boise State senior forward Javan Buchanan missed the first matchup with UNLV due to a back injury. Buchanan averages 12 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists.
Junior center Drew Fielder is the Broncos’ leading scorer at 13.5 points and 5.4 rebounds.
