Cal athletes will have to travel across the country to North Carolina for virtually all major Atlantic Coast Conference postseason championship events over the next several years.

Stanford and Cal agreed to 12-year memberships in the ACC starting with the 2024-25 academic year.

The ACC last week announced its postseason sites for half of its 28 sponsored sports, including basketball and baseball, for the next several years. All of those postseason events will be held in North Carolina cities, which are about 2,300 miles from Berkeley and will require a 4½-hour flight. That is more than twice the flight time for any current ACC school to North Carolina. This is in addition to coast-to-coast travel Golden Bears athletic teams will make during the regular season.

The ACC had announced previously that the conference championship football game will be played at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., for at least the next seven years, from 2024 though 2030.

The ACC on Thursday announced that postseason championship events for men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, gymnastics, swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, rowing, lacrosse and women’s golf will be held at sites in North Carolina for the next several years.

Most of the postseason events will be held in Charlotte, Greensboro or Raleigh, with a few being held in Durham and Cary, both of which are just outside Raleigh, N.C.

The postseason schedules include sites for the upcoming 2024 postseason events, which will not include Cal or Stanford.
