A 21-17 loss to Oregon State does not have many bright spots, so let's get those out of the way. Cal linebacker Evan Weaver had 21 tackles, including two sacks, and that was one of five sacks by the Bears.

Cal also limited Oregon State receiver Isaiah Hodgins to five catches and 36 yards, and if the conference's leading receiver only manages those numbers, you figure you have a pretty good shot.

It didn't matter, which leads to the negatives. You can tell by the confused look on my face in the video.

Cal quarterbacks were sacked nine times, and that hurts just to think about it. Cal managed just 17 points against an Oregon State defense that had yielded more than 30 points to all five of its previous FBS opponents this season. The Beavers were coming off a 52-7 home loss to Utah.

Oh, and Utah is the team Cal faces next week on the road.

And the Bears might have to do it with a true freshman quarterback. Devon Modster did not have a great game, but he did rush for 76 yards to lead the team in that category.

He did not finish the game, however, leaving the game midway in the fourth quarter with an undisclosed injury.

Justin Wilcox said after the game that he was unable to provide an update on Modster's status.

In any case, taking a three-losing streak into Salt Lake City is not a good situation. The Utes have an outstanding defense, considerably better than what the Bears faced Saturday.
