Contra Costa (Junior) College linebacker Lucas Vanderlind recently announced through social media that he has committed to Cal, presumably as a preferred walk-on.

This past season as a freshman at Contra Costa College the 6-foot-2, 225-pound  Vanderlind recorded 40 tackles in nine games. That included 10.5 sacks for loss and 2.5 sacks.

The 6-foot-1, 210-pound Vanderlind was rated a two-star recruit coming out of Petaluma (Calif.) High School last year by 247 Sports.

Here are his 2023 statistics:

Video highlights of Vanderlind during his freshman season at Contra Costa College:

Cal has had success with walk-ons. Two of its primary pass receivers in 2023 – wide receiver Trond Grizzell and tight end Jack Endries – arrived at Cal as walk-ons. And the Bears have a history of utilizing walk-ons during Justin Wilcox’s time as Cal’s head coach.

Here is Vanderlind’s tweet regarding Cal’s interest, saying he has been given an opportunity to play, but does not say he received a scholarship offer.
