With the 2023-’24 college football season nearly complete, oddsmakers are already looking ahead to next season.

Last Thursday, FanDuel released the initial odds to win next year’s Heisman Trophy. At +750 odds, Texas’ Quinn Ewers and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe were listed as the co-favorites at to win college football’s most coveted award. Georgia’s Carson Beck (+850), Oregon’s Dillon Gabriel (+1100), and Texas A&M’s Conner Weigman (+1900) rounded out the top five.

A little further down the list at +7000 was Colorado Buffaloes signal caller Shedeur Sanders. In 11 games last season, Sanders completed 298-of-430 passes for 3,230 yards and 27 touchdowns through the air. He added 394 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. A total of 20 different quarterbacks were listed ahead of Sanders in FanDuel’s release.

At +13000, Travis Hunter, was listed as an even bigger longshot to win the award. Despite missing three games to injury, the dynamic Hunter starred at wide receiver and cornerback for the Buffaloes in 2023. On the offensive side of the ball, he finished with 57 receptions for 721 yards and five touchdowns. Hunter added 30 total tackles and tied for the team lead with three interceptions on defense. He was named a consensus first-team All-American for the 2023 season, the first CU player to receive such an honor since Nate Solder in 2010.

History, however, isn’t in Hunter’s favor. Since 2000, only three non-quarterbacks – Mark Ingram (2009), Derrick Henry (2015) and DeVonta Smith (2020) – have won the prestigious award. Michigan’s Charles Woodson is the only two-way player to win the Heisman Trophy, capturing the award in 1997.

Since Thursday’s release, Sanders’ odds to win the 2024 Heisman Trophy have already improved. Alongside Penn State quarterback Drew Allar, Sanders is now listed at +4000 to win the award.
