WSU's Jake Dickert says there's a false narrative with Deion Sanders' roster flip

Another Pac-12 coach defense Deion's use of the transfer portal

Jake Dickert is all for open competition in college football.

The Washington State head football coach came to the defense of Deion Sanders' way of rebuilding CU's roster and sees a lot of paralleled situations with what the Cougars are facing. He gave his reasoning at Pac-12 Media Day on Friday.

"We're building a program a lot like (Sanders did)," Dickert said. "The narrative around it is false. I don't think there's a head coach in this world that doesn't do what he thinks is best to rebuild a program. And whatever way that is, I'm sure he's doing the way he's best equipped to be successful."

Colorado's Charles Kelly unapologetic for building a better team

Sanders has been targeted for his unconventional ways. The Hall of Famer took on the task of flipping Colorado's roster with over 70 new players coming to Boulder. Oklahoma's Brent Venables was one of the few coaches to publically share his thoughts on Coach Prime's takeover, saying he would've waited a year before bringing in new players.

Dickert enters his third year at Wazoo after assuming interim duties due to Nick Rolovich's refusal to comply with the state's COVID-19 vaccine mandate. He has led the Cougars to two straight bowl appearances without a postseason win.

Washington State opens the season in Fort Collins against Colorado State on Sept. 2 (4 p.m. MT/TV: CBSSN). They'll return to Pullman the following week for an ABC Primetime Pac-12/Big Ten special with Wisconsin.
