As the early signing period begins this week, several of the biggest names in the transfer portal will be officially signing with their new(est) home in college football. However, for the quarterback position, several talented players are currently deciding whether or not it makes sense to return to their 2023 school. However, anything can happen in the age of the portal.

These six names are ones to watch in the coming weeks.

Caden Veltkamp - Western Kentucky

6'6"- 235 lbs - 3 years of eligibility remaining

Veltkamp led the Hilltoppers to a monumental comeback win in the Famous Toastery Bowl on Monday night with five touchdowns and 383 yards through the air.. He had six pass attempts in college prior to that. His size is a strong positive on his resume, as well. While Veltkamp may still return to his hometown team, he indicated after the game that he's still not sure what he wants to do.

Braylon Braxton - Tulsa

6'2" - 222 lbs - 2 years of eligibility remaining

Braxton did not play much in 2023 after being named a freshman All-American in 2022. That year, he threw for 10 touchdowns with only two interceptions in nine games. He's a fairly capable runner as well, with five touchdowns in that 2022 season as well. Braxton is a Frisco, Texas native who had offers from several other G5 and FCS schools coming out of high school.

Jordan McCloud - James Madison

6'0" - 199 lbs - 1 year of eligibility remaining

McCloud will likely be looking for this fourth school after playing at JMU, Arizona, and South Florida. This past season, McCloud was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year. Former JMU head coach Curt Cignetti has moved on to Indiana. McCloud will play in JMU's bowl game against Air Force on Saturday, December 23. he threw for 3400 yards and 32 touchdowns with nine interceptions in 2023.

Brayden Schager - Hawaii

6' 3" - 225 lbs - 1 year of eligibility remaining

Schager is a Dallas, Texas native who was a three-star recruit out of Highland Park High School. Schager had offers from from a myriad of FCS schools, as well as Toledo, New Mexico, Sam Houston, and Texas State. Of all the G5 quarterbacks in the portal, Schager had the most passing yards with 3542. Part of that can be attributed to the frequency with which Hawaii passed the ball in Timmy Chang's version of the run-and-shoot. That was good for 11th in all of FBS.

Cam Fancher - Marshall

6' 1" - 201 lbs - 2 years of eligibility remaining

Fancher struggled a bit with turnovers at Marshall, but certainly had bright spots in the last two seasons. In 2022 and 2023 for the Herd, Fancher accounted for 26 touchdowns, throwing 17 interceptions. Fancher is a native of the Dayton, Ohio metro area. A number of G5 teams, as well as Oregon State, are reportedly in the mix. per 247Sports.

Gerry Bohanon - South Florida

6' 3" - 226 lbs - 1 year of eligibility remaining

Bohnanon spent four years at Baylor before ending up at USF for the 2022 and 2023 seasons. Bohanon did not appear in a game in 2023 due to injuries. In that time, Byrum Brown seemed to cement himself as USF's starter moving forward. His best season was 2021 at Baylor, where he threw for 2,200 yards with 18 passing touchdowns and nine rushing touchdowns.
