With spring practices underway, the Iowa State Cyclones are preparing for the upcoming season and trying to do their best to have a successful campaign.

After losing nearly the entire roster in the transfer portal, the Cyclones had to completely rebuild their football team from scratch. This was a unit that was projected to be one of the best in the Big 12 prior to Matt Campbell leaving. Now, new head coach Jimmy Rogers has his work cut out for him, trying to put a lot of new pieces together.

So far, the early results from spring practice have been solid. The team is seemingly starting to take shape, and there has been praise for certain position groups, like at quarterback

How good Iowa State can be in 2026 remains to be seen at this point. With a new coach and a completely new team, it’s impossible to predict what the program might look like when the regular season comes to an end. However, Rogers has had success early on in his career and brings a strong defensive mindset along with a physical offensive game plan that has worked.

While he didn’t inherit a great situation following the departure of Campbell, he is now trying to build the program. Due to his late arrival, his 2026 recruiting class certainly was rushed, but he and the coaching staff have been working hard for 2027.

According to Alec Busse of 247Sports, the team recently hosted three-star quarterback Ben Musser after giving him an offer. However, the talented quarterback is already committed to App State, but appears to be keeping his options open.

Iowa State Trying to Swipe Musser

Despite the three-star quarterback already being committed to App State, the Cyclones aren’t the only team that he is visiting. With his stock seemingly on the rise, Musser very well could be committing elsewhere with the caliber of programs that are pursuing him.

According to Rivals, he is ranked as the 61st quarterback in the class. Furthermore, they are also predicting that despite the commitment to App State, the Virginia Tech Hokies and James Franklin will ultimately be where he lands.

The Cyclones continue to branch out and try to pursue good talent from around the country. While landing Musser might be a bit of a long shot at this point, it is good to see them at least in the conversation at this point.
