Three Takeaways From LSU's Sweep Over Alabama

LSU baseball earned its second consecutive sweep over an SEC foe after taking down the Alabama Crimson Tide over the weekend in Alex Box Stadium

The Tigers came from behind once again to earn the victory on Sunday, proving no deficit is too large to overcome with their offensive firepower.

It was Dylan Crews and Jordan Thompson who paved the way in Game 3, both launching a homer to give this team life.

Here are three takeaways from LSU’s sweep of Alabama:

Tommy ‘Tanks’ is the Real Deal

As if it wasn’t already known what Tommy White was capable of at the plate. He came to Baton Rouge as one of the top transfers in the country and has lived up to the hype. White entered Game 3 of the series leading the nation with 70 RBI’s and didn’t slow down once again.

White helped lead the Tigers to a massive sixth inning to put them ahead of the Crimson Tide with an RBI single to score a big-time run, but his consistency has been the biggest takeaway this year.

When “Tanks” goes to the plate, you know what you’re getting, and most of the time it’s an extra base hit. White is up to 15 homers on the year as he continues his dominance at the plate for a squad that is hitting their stride in a big way.

Deep Bullpen Usage

Jay Johnson elected to go deep in his bullpen this weekend, and after witnessing this group struggle as of late, it was nice to see them step up on Saturday. After collapsing on Friday, giving up five runs, the Tigers’ bullpen stepped up in a big way in Game 2.

It was a game to forget for Ty Floyd after earning the start on Saturday, but his bullpen picked up the pace. Floyd allowed six earned runs in 2.2 innings pitched but Javen Coleman, Sam Dutton, Blake Money, Gavin Guidry, Riley Cooper, Thatcher Hurd and Nate Ackenhausen handled business.

Coleman looked the part on Saturday as he eases his way back into the rotation, and after striking out six batters during his Game 2 appearance, he could be getting back to his old ways. For Hurd, he strung together what may have been his best SEC performance of the season.

The bullpen has certainly been a thorn in this program’s side all year, but Saturday showed that Coach Johnson has the guys to handle business when called upon.

No Deficit Too Large To Overcome

The Tigers are simply never out of the game no matter the deficit. Jay Johnson detailed after Sunday’s game that he knows his team is never out of a game and they proved that once again in Game 3 after coming from behind to earn the win.

LSU also overcame their largest deficit of the season (5) on Saturday to earn the win. With Dylan Crews, Tommy White and the recent rise of Hayden Travinski at the plate, the Tigers can flip a switch in the blink of an eye to put runs on the board.

The series sweep over Alabama was one this program needed to get back on track after losing to Nicholls on Tuesday. When the lights are brightest, the Tigers click on all cylinders and it showed after extending their SEC winning streak to six games on Sunday.

LSU is back in action on Tuesday where they will travel to Hammond, La. to take on the Southeastern Louisiana Lions with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
