The state of Louisiana is known for producing talented running backs, and the next great one might be currently living in Baton Rouge.

Whenever there’s a great prospect within the same city as a major program like LSU, that program will generally go all-in on signing that prospect. LSU already did that with a local running back by extending a scholarship offer to a class of 2022 prospect.

Le’Veon Moss is not just a typical Division I running back recruit. His athleticism stands out despite playing amongst many other talented players in the Baton Rouge area. It was eye opening to watch his film for the first time.

One of the great aspects of being a scout would be watching a player for the first time and not really knowing what a player can do. Just a blank slate. After opening up the Hudl film of Moss, it was only a few seconds later that one word would be said.

Wow!

Last season, Moss was roughly 5-foot-10, and 180-pounds. He played much bigger, as will be denoted below, but it’s that speed and burst that catches one’s eye first and foremost.

The Baton Rouge (La.) Istrouma running back provides an explosion into the second and third levels of a defense that cannot be taught. Forget the 40-yard dash. Moss hits high gear within the first five yards. That’s the most important aspect of his speed because it translates to the gridiron moreso than a track.

It’s right now. That initial burst will allow him to hit the hole and scoot past linebackers and into the third level. Once into the secondary, Moss’s ability to be shifty and decisive with his cuts will often lead to long touchdown runs.

While certainly a big play threat, Moss also flashed his ability to play physical football. Istrouma utilized Wing-T offensive principles during the 2019 season. As such, Moss often ran end a round hand offs. During this particular clip below, he flattened a defender attempting to protect the edge. Impressive physicality from Moss.

Finally, just to display the overall talent Moss possesses, this kickoff return is impressive and funny at the same time. He did just about everything wrong, and yet he still scored a touchdown. He misjudged the ball in the air, went all the way against the grain around the end, and he still made the kickoff unit look bad. And oh, the poor kicker trying to tackle Moss. Not so much.

There are many aspects of Moss’s game to enjoy. With that, below is his junior Hudl film. Speed, quickness, strength, cut back ability, and vision all consistently presented. Here’s a look at his junior season.

While it’s still early within Moss’s career, he looks to be the next great running back out of Louisiana. It will be interesting to see how the Baton Rouge product develops over the course of this season and next.
