Coming down to the wire in the MSU horse race to be the next Head Coach!

 

1. MSU is in the final stages of background checks on the final candidates. Those background checks are being handled by Chuck Neinas. according to two independent sources at MSU
2. MSU would like to have “secured” the next coach within the next 72 hours, however liking to and having it done are two totally different equations. If it were necessary, MSU would withhold a public announcement of the new coach until a later date. That time line has been communicated to people at MSU.
3. Brian Kelly is the frontrunner although that does not mean that he is the sure thing yet. Kelly “wowed them” with a great interview according to a MSU source
4. MSU is greatly concerned that key recruits have reopened the process and are considering or already have considered other schools and is very aware that time is of the essence. That said with a sooner better then later attitude, LAKS has made it known that the process is to critical to make a quick hire to keep kids. She wants it done as fast but more importantly as thorough as possible.
5. Kelly had his on campus interview with LAKS on Monday evening according once again to a source very close to the search process with MSU.
6. As reported today by the LSJ Jimmy Raye is part of the interview rotation but here is a new name also, Mike Haywood an assistant coach at Notre Dame was also interviewed again according to a source inside MSU, and confirmed from two outside sources.Â
7. Shurmur appears (again appears) out of the race. He has not been contacted since an interview with LAKS on Thursday the 16th of November. Others may have spoken to him but not on behalf of MSU.
8. I am in no way saying that Kelly is the final choice because that has not been communicated to me. With that said he is clearly at this point in front runner status.
9. According to a source connected to Iowa State University, Kelly is also being considered there and is expected to be interviewed by them this weekend.
