Betting Odds: Noah Kim the favorite to start for Michigan State

Kim, a redshirt junior, has been locked in a battle with redshirt freshman Katin Houser this summer...

A little over a month until Michigan State's season-opener against Central Michigan, the most pressing question on everyone's mind is who will start at quarterback for the Spartans.

Noah Kim (-200) is the betting favorite according to BetOnline Sportsbook over Katin Houser (+150) to take the first offensive snap for MSU in Week 1 against the Chippewas.

Kim, a redshirt junior, appeared in four games last season backing up 2022 starter Payton Thorne, who transferred to Auburn this offseason. Kim completed 14-of-19 pass attempts (73.7%) with three touchdowns a year ago. Thorne (+100) is an underdog to incumbent Tigers' starter Robby Ashford (-140) to start for Auburn this fall.

Thorne struggled through injury for much of the 2022 season, and ultimately had a disappointing year leading the Spartans. That led to a three-way battle this spring between Thorne, Kim and redshirt freshman Katin Houser for the right to lead Michigan State into 2023.

Thorne shocked many when he entered the transfer portal on April 30, ultimately ending up at Auburn. That left Kim and Houser to continue the QB battle in East Lansing. Houser, who played just six snaps all of last season, is a former four-star high school prospect out of St. John Bosco (Calif.).

This summer, Michigan State also added incoming freshman Sam Leavitt, the No. 312 overall prospect and No. 21 quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class, according to 247Sports' composite rankings. The Spartans kick off their season against Central Michigan on Friday, Sept. 1 at Spartan Stadium.
