Hondo's Blog

Hello folks!

Thanks again for taking the time to read Spartan Nation.

  • Two quick notes!
  1. Dave Dombrowski the Tigers GM joins me tonight on Hondo’s House at 7:30!
  2. On Monday’s Hondo’s House at 7:30 my guest will be Lions President and CEO Matt Millen for the entire half hour!
  • Don’t think that the Lions franchise tag on Jeff Backus means that they are “thrilled” with him. His moaning about Detroit makes some want to let him go. They will continue to try to work out a deal but with the uncertainty of the CBA (collective bargaining agreement) and the lack of a good replacement in free agency, this move had to be made. The decision to do this was discussed up until the point it was made; this was not a no brainer.
  • I spoke last night to a Vikings player that was sure 48 hours ago that the Vikes were going to let Daunte go, and after Daunte talked with new head coach Brad Childress, he said that now, there is a chance, albeit slight, that Daunte may stay.
  • Jamal Lewis was “relieved” according to a source close to him, that the Ravens did not use the franchise tag. He said that Lewis wants to move on in order to get a “new beginning” for his career.
  • Jeff Hartings the Steelers center and former Lion told me that he is willing to rework his deal to stay in Pittsburgh. He loves the organization, the city and everything about it.
  • Anything can happen, especially in the NFL but with the horizon being darkened with the CBA issues, it appears that Denver is the most likely place for embattled WR T.O. I talked early this morning with someone close to the situation and they said that they were 85% certain he would be a Bronco. They also said that they wouldn’t see any team trading for him, that teams will wait for the Eagles to cut him.  Why give up something that you can get for free.
  • You will hear so many people talk about Young and Bush for the NFL draft, but the buzz is certainly around one player: Virginia LT D'Brickashaw Ferguson. This mountain of a man is NFL ready now, and the folks who draft him will put him at left tackle for the next 14 years. Here is a little hint; the Lions love this young man!
  • I respect and admire Izzo, but I do not understand why a 7’ center in Paul Davis spends so much time at the 3 pt. Line? I just don’t get it. I have to believe that it befuddles Izzo.
  • MSU Hockey got its 6th straight win last night at the Sault! 3 goals from 3 different players made this nice victory a true team effort!
  • The MSU women spanked the UM women by 26 last night in Ann Arbor. Great job ladies.
  • I am going to the combine this weekend and then to Bloomington for the MSU vs. IU game. You’ll see it on the news and read about it right here on Monday!
  • 7 month and 11 days until the MSU UM football game!

Thanks everyone, hug your loved ones and remind them that you love them!
