MHSAA Boys' Basketball Report - February 12, 2014

While the weather hasn’t changed yet and it’s still bitterly cold, high school gyms across the state are red hot. Not only is basketball going on, but wrestling is coming up on their state championships. Bowling, hockey, swimming, skiing, and competitive cheer are all winding down their seasons in anticipation of the state championships as well. But we are here to talk about boys’ basketball. They start districts in a few weeks and then the process of weeding out the weaker teams begins. That’s getting ahead of us though. Let’s look at last week’s action.

High Score of the Week

Muskegon Heights PS Academy 89 Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian 87 (2OT) (176 points)

This one came down to the very end of the second overtime. That’s the type of game you want when two of the best teams in Class C battle. Jalontae Johnson tipped in a shot at the buzzer to give Muskegon Heights Academy the win. Johnson finished with four points, a steal, and two rebounds. Not bad for a freshman! Eddie Tornes led all scorers with 33 points, four steals, a block, six assists, and seven rebounds. Antonio Jones scored 19, stole two balls, tossed three assists, and grabbed six boards. For NorthPointe Christian, Preston Huckaby scored 32. He also had three steals and five rebounds. Andrew Holesinger and Kual Nhial both scored 20 in the losing effort.

Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Ellsworth 92 Vanderbilt 26 (66 points)

They blew the scores out of every paper.  Congrats on the big win Ellsworth!

Century Club Part Four

Southfield Christian 105 Plymouth Christian 66

Lindsey Hunter led all scorers with 22 points. Bakari Evelyn scored 13. On the losing side, Daniel Jipping had 19 points.

Low Score of the Week

Felch North Dickinson 32 Republic-Michigamme 30 (62 points)

This one came down to the final seconds, just like the High Score of the Week game. Reggie Johnson nailed two free throws in the final seconds and North Dickinson won the game. R-M had a chance though. They had two free throws with no time remaining, but missed them. Marcus Antilla was the leading scorer for the North Dickinson with 12 points, 11 of which came in the first quarter. Logan O’Neil led all scorers in the losing effort with 15 points.
