We have made it through Snowmagedden 2011! Now that January has become February and even though the weather is cold outside, the heat is being turned up in the gyms across the state. While looking at the game scores from the last week, I was amazed at how many games were very close. There must have been five or six games that were won by only a single point. As a result, there weren’t the blowouts that we’ve seen in past weeks. We even had two games tie for the high score of the week title! It’s time to take a peek at the previous week.

Coach Cottrell’s BLOWOUT of the Week

Hamtramck 90 Hamtramck Frontier Academy 35 (55 points)

Typically, it’s not a pretty sight when an academy plays a public school. This was no exception to that rule. Although these two schools are a mile apart, the score was much further apart than that. Anthony Nrecaj scored 25 points in the winning effort. Salah Alagari scored 20 for Frontier Academy.

Low Score of the Week

Plymouth 40 Livonia Franklin 25 (65 points)

When I see a score this low, I begin to wonder why. Did they stall to keep the other team from scoring early and often? Was there a fight that got the game canceled? In this case, it was just terrible shooting. They were a combined 15 of 88 from the floor. That is atrocious! Plymouth got the win and stayed perfect in the KLAA South after trailing 12-11 at the break. The difference was Plymouth shot well from the charity stripe, connecting on 19 of 28 free throws. Stephen Jahn scored 10 points in the winning effort. For Livonia Franklin, Tino Thomas scored nine and blocked five shots.

High Score of the Week Part 1

Saginaw Swan Valley 89 Frankenmuth 74 (163 points)

The Vikings of Swan Valley played a cross-over game against Frankenmuth and won because of a strong finish. Cody Call scored all of his 14 points in the fourth quarter which helped them put away the visiting Eagles. Leading scorer for the Vikings was Jared Briguglio with 30 points, followed by Matt Kuligowski who had 22. Briguglio also tossed five assists and pulled down eight rebounds. For the Eagles of Frankenmuth, Kent Redford scored 27 points, including seven three point shots. He also stole two balls, tossed two assists, and pulled down five rebounds. Swan Valley is undefeated this season (12-0) and is ranked #8 in the Class B polls.

High Score of the Week Part 2

Pellston 85 Mancelona 78 (163 points)

Sometimes, it’s a one man show. Other times, it’s two guys battling it out. That was the case in this game. Taylor Borst scored 50 of Mancelona’s 78 points. Not to be outdone, Christopher Hass scored 57 of his team’s 85 points. It wasn’t easy though. Mancelona was down by 20 points at halftime but scratched and clawed their way to a two point deficit with two minutes left in the game, largely due to Borst’s 38 second half points. Hass also grabbed 10 rebounds, had six assists, and blocked five shots. Although he had a great night, it didn’t come near Ed Burling€™s record of 97 points for Crystal Falls back in the 1910-1911 season. It was a great job by both players in what sounds like a very exciting game.
