MSU OC/QBs Coach Brian Lindgren Talks Aidan Chiles

New Michigan State offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Lindgren coached Spartans quarterback Aidan Chiles at Oregon State.

Michigan State quarterback Aidan Chiles has an advantage having his former head coach, Jonathan Smith, and his former offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Brian Lindgren, in his corner again with his new team, but he still has much to learn from the two.

Chiles was the backup quarterback for the Beavers last season, but now, the sophomore quarterback is taking on a much bigger role as he enters his first season with the Spartans.

"I just think moving into that [role] where he's taking a bulk of the 1 reps, I just think the maturity -- we're really challenging him on just consistency," Lindgren told reporters after Michigan State's spring practice on Thursday. "I think as a young guy a year ago, you saw flashes where it's one or two big-time plays, and then, there would be two to three mental mistakes or missing a throw here, not making a correct read. So, I've been really challenging him on consistency, and we've seen it at times, but I still think that's something we're getting him -- just tidying up the details as he moves into the fall of just that being consistent and stacking those quality, well-executed plays one after another, being more consistent that way."

Chiles said earlier in spring camp that he doesn't feel the weight of the expectations being brought on him for his first season as a Spartan.

"I think Aidan's got a -- he's had a good approach to it all, and I think he kind of understands the perception of that, I guess," Lindgren said. "And we try to always talk about keeping his focus process-oriented and like, 'Hey, how can I prove myself today? What can I do to execute this rep right?' Stay in the moment that way, and doing that, time and time again, and good things will happen.

"Not getting yourself too high or too low or looking too far ahead, I guess. Just focus in on improving right now and doing what he can to make himself a better player."

Chiles played in nine games in his lone season at Oregon State. He threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns on 24 completions.
