Katie Sharp Named Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week

Redshirt sophomore earns first career weekly honor from the Big Ten.

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Fresh off her first career win at the Clemson Invitational over the weekend, Michigan State redshirt sophomore Katie Sharp has been named the Big Ten Women’s Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

Sharp claimed medalist honors with a career-low 8-under-par 208 (68-70-70), which tied for the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history. The inaugural Clemson Invitational featured 14 teams, including nine ranked in the Golfstat Top 50, and was held at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, South Carolina.

Sharp's 208 was only one shot behind Allyssa Ferrell's school-record 207 (-9) she carded at the 2014 Central District Invitational in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Caroline Powers also had a 208 in the 2011 Tar Heel Invitational.

A native of Kendallville, Indiana, Sharp collected 11 birdies for the tournament and had only three bogeys all weekend. She entered the final round in a three-way tie for first place, but pulled away for a two-stroke victory with a third round of 70 (-2). Sharp’s 68 in Friday’s first round tied a career low and tied for the fifth-lowest single round in school history.

Sharp is currently second on Spartans with a 74.63 scoring average, an improvement of 2.51 strokes from her redshirt freshman season (77.14). She is also second on the team in birdies (56) and under-par rounds (6).

Ranked No. 42 in the Golfstat rankings, the Spartans placed third overall in the Clemson Invitational and are preparing for the Lady Buckeye Invitational in Columbus on April 16-17.
