Women’s Basketball Selected Second in Preseason Big Ten Polls

 

Senior Allyssa DeHaan was voted to All-Big Ten Preseason Team by both the coaches and media.

 

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Big Ten Conference released its preseason poll on Thursday morning prior to the conference’s basketball media day in Chicago. The Michigan State women’s basketball team was picked second by both the coaches and media, while senior Allyssa DeHaan was chosen to the five-player All-Big Ten Preseason Team by both parties.

 

Ohio State topped both preseason polls, after winning the conference regular season and tournament titles last season. Following OSU and MSU in the coaches poll was Minnesota, Purdue, Iowa, Illinois, Penn State,

 

Northwestern, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan. In the media poll, Purdue was picked third, followed by Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Penn State, Indiana, Northwestern and Michigan.

 

Joining DeHaan on the preseason teams was Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year Jantel Lavender of Ohio State, her teammate Samantha Prahalis, Penn State’s Tyra Grant and Illinois’ Jenna Smith. Lavender was a unanimous selection by both the coaches and media, while Smith was an unanimous choice by the coaches.

 

Michigan State went 22-11 overall last season and advance to its third NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. In Big Ten play, MSU tied for second at 13-5, its second most conference wins in program history. The Spartans return all five starters and 12 letterwinners from last year’s squad.

 

The Spartans begin their exhibition season on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 6:30 p.m. against Wayne State in the Breslin Center.
