FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Michigan State softball team (7-2) closed out day two at the Homewood Suites/Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Tournament with a 1-0 win over Villanova on Saturday, Feb. 19. With the win, MSU brings its current win streak to four straight contests. Freshman Cassee Layne earned her third shutout win of the year in 7.0 innings of work.

Senior Lindsey Hansen blasted a lead-off homer in the top of the fourth to score the lone run of the game. Hansen went 1-for-3 on the day, but her lone hit proved to be the most important one of the game.

Layne settled into the circle nicely against Villanova as the first inning went down in order.

Nova’s best scoring opportunity arrived in the bottom of the sixth when after back-to-back outs. Valerie Ortega posted a single to right center for the first of two straight Villanova singles. Amanda Marquez posted the other with a single through the left side. Kristi Burlin wound up coming in to run for Ortega and was the last out of the inning after being forced out at third.

Layne goes to 3-1 on the season with the win over the Wildcats. Layne struck out seven batters and allowed only three hits with no runs.

Molly Manning took the loss for Villanova and falls to 1-1 for the year. Manning recorded one strikeout and five hits.

The Spartans close out action in Fort Myers, Fla., with its final contest of the Homewood Suites/Hilton Garden Inn FGCU Tournament tomorrow (Feb. 20). MSU faces South Carolina at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
