State of Michigan State Athletics Podcast Episode XVII

On this edition of the state of Michigan State athletics podcast, Spartan Nation senior writer Jon Schopp and publisher Hondo Carpenter discuss this week's matchup vs. Michigan.

East Lansing, MI – The Michigan State Spartans had its 21-game winning streak snapped in season-opening home contests after falling to Rutgers in week one, 38-27.

It was the first time MSU lost to the Scarlet Knights since joining the conference in 2014.

However, there's no time to dwell on an 0-1 start because the Spartans travel to Ann Arbor for a Halloween matchup versus rival Michigan.

Spartan Nation publisher Hondo S. Carpenter, Sr., and Spartan Nation senior writer Jon Schopp discuss the 113th meeting between the two schools.

Mel Tucker's honeymoon may have ended quicker than expected, but Schopp said he wouldn't be surprised if MSU walked out of the Big House with a victory this weekend.

Though it wouldn't be traditional, he believes their only chance of winning is by letting Rocky Lombardi air it out.

Against Rutgers, Michigan State's run game was basically non-existent, carrying the ball 39 times for 50 yards while averaging 1.3 YPC.

And at times, the offensive line didn't look ready to compete in the Big Ten East.

Lombardi made plenty of mistakes himself but completed 72% of his passes for 319 yards, three touchdowns, two interceptions, and one fumble.
