Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Purdue Boilermakers Prediction: CFB This Week

The Illinois Fighting Illini got back in the win column last week against Florida Atlantic 23-17. It was not pretty, but they got the job done after getting beat by Kansas and Penn State in back-to-back weeks. Quarterback Luke Altmeyer bounced back, throwing for 303 yards and a touchdown while also adding one on the ground. This was after an awful performance against Penn State when he threw four interceptions.

The Illinois defense is finally starting to find their identity once again and that starts on the defensive front. Keith Randolph and the projected first-round pick Jer’Zhan Newton have been making their presence felt over the past two games, combining for four tackles for loss and a ton of quarterback pressures. They will certainly make life tough for the Boilermakers offense.

As for Purdue, first-year head coach Ryan Walters has had a rough start. They currently sit at 1-3 and have lost back-to-back games to Syracuse and Wisconsin. Walters came over as a defensive-minded head coach since he was the defensive coordinator for the last two seasons for the Illini, but their defense has really struggled. In all three losses, they have allowed at least 35 points in each game.

It has been their offense that has kept them in games. Quarterback Hudson Card has been solid to start his Purdue career. He has thrown for over 1,000 yards in four games and three touchdowns to go along with three crucial interceptions.

Illinois vs. Purdue Picks & CFB Best Bets for Saturday Featuring Under 52.5

This could be the game in which the Boilermakers defense gets on track. Walters practiced against this offense every day for the past two seasons while he was on Brett Bielema’s coaching staff. We project this game to be an ugly affair with Ryan Walters knowing what the Illini want to run, and the Illinois defense stepping up.

With both of these defenses having a ton of potential, we expect this game to be a lower-scoring affair. That is why we like the under 52.5 (-115 at FanDuel) to hit in this one. If you place an $11 wager on the under to hit in this one, you would profit $10 if the game finished with fewer than 53 points scored.
