Syracuse Women's Lacrosse Falls in Double Overtime to Maryland

The Orange suffered a tough loss to one of the nation's best teams.

A back and forth battle with Maryland resulted in a double overtime 9-8 loss for Syracuse women's lacrosse. The Orange are now 1-2 on the season with both losses coming to top 10 opponents.

Saturday’s game honored former Syracuse lacrosse player Robert Kavovit who tragically lost his life to a battle with mental illness. Kavovit’s family launched a foundation called 15 For Life which shines a light on those who struggle with mental illnesses and raise suicide awareness. The game was dedicated to that foundation.

This was a low scoring game as both teams' defense and goalies stepped up. Delaney Sweitzer recorded 10 and Emily Sterling had nine. Both teams were waiting for golden opportunities on offense as taking care of the ball was crucial in this game.

Natalie Smith, Olivia Adamson, Emma Tyrell all led the Orange with two goals. Emma Ward also tallied one and had two assists. Payton Rowley contributed a goal.

Head Coach Kayla Treanor said the team struggled to capitalize when they needed to.

“Certainly an unfortunate loss for us today just really bummed because that was a winnable game for us,” said Treanor. “We had so many opportunities to win that game and we ultimately didn't make the plays that we needed in order to win it.”

Treanor said the team will learn a lot from this loss.

“For us we have to learn from it, move on, and know it's early in the year,” said Treanor. “We’ve got a lot of lacrosse left to play. We have a huge opponent coming up next weekend.”

The Orange will face Notre Dame in South Bend on Saturday at 12 p.m.
