Syracuse Women's Lacrosse Earns Two Seed in NCAA Tournament: Path to Final Four, Championship

The Orange is looking for its first ever NCAA title.

Syracuse women’s lacrosse has earned the #2 overall seed in the NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Tournament. By making their way into the top three, they also earned a first round bye.

The Orange will take on the winner of Johns Hopkins and UMass. Johns Hopkins (8-8) received an at-large bid out of the Big Ten. The Blue Jays barely earned consideration from the selection committee; a team must have at least a .500 record to be considered for an at-large bid.

UMass (16-2) earned an at-large bid out of the America East Conference. Unlike the Blue Jays, they are well above the minimum record for consideration.

In the final poll before the NCAA Tournament, Johns Hopkins the #18 team in the nation and UMass was ranked #13. Syracuse was ranked #4, falling behind Northwestern (17-1), Boston College (16-3) and UNC (14-4).

To advance to the Final Four, Syracuse would have to beat either Johns Hopkins or UMass, which would be a second round matchup. Then, they’d face James Madison (17-2), Army (15-3), Maryland (14-6) or Drexel (12-5).

James Madison is the seeded team in that part of the bracket, earning the #7 seed with their efforts this season. This is Army’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament in program history and they are coached by Michelle Tumolo, one of the all-time greats of Syracuse women’s lacrosse. The Orange took down Maryland 20-11 in early February.

Should Syracuse advance to the Final Four and if the favorites hold serve, the Orange would face Boston College in a rematch of the regular season finale. A win there would set up a National Championship rematch with either Northwestern or North Carolina. The five seed, Denver, is the only undefeated team in the country and is another team to watch.

The game time and channel have yet to be announced, but Syracuse’s game against either Johns Hopkins or UMass will take place at Syracuse Soccer Stadium next weekend, per their Twitter page.
