Charlotte 49ers vs. Tennessee Volunteers Predictions for 6/2

The Tennessee Volunteers have been on quite the run in the college baseball world over the past few seasons. While last year’s record, featuring a 25-5 mark in SEC play, was unlikely to be matched, the 38-19 final tally for the season was another solid showing for the Vols. Still, a 3-0 loss to Texas A&M in the first round of the SEC tournament showed that the Volunteers are more beatable than last season. Tennessee will look to move past the disappointing end to their season as they enter the College World Series on a low note.

On the other hand, the Charlotte 49ers are riding high coming into the tournament, fresh off a Conference USA title – their first in program history. They exceeded expectations on the year, racking up 34 wins compared to 24 losses. While their overall record and C-USA crown is a sign of the 49ers' ability to play up, they only managed a 17-12 record in conference play against comparatively weak competition. Despite the relatively tame conference record, Charlotte did manage two regular-season victories over South Carolina, another CWS-qualifying SEC program.

The 49ers have momentum on their side and have shown the ability to beat anyone in the country as they enter the College World Series searching for a first-round upset over Tennessee.

Overall, the Volunteers are more talented than the 49ers. They feature one of the deepest rosters in baseball, with a lineup that boasts a collective .290 batting average and one of the best starting staffs in baseball. However, the College World Series is just as much about momentum and desire as it is about talent.

Despite the plethora of talent on the roster, Tennessee has been one of the most inconsistent teams in college baseball: they swept SEC champion (and #1-seed) Vanderbilt and got swept by Missouri, one of (if not the) worst teams in the SEC, during the regular season.

There are two possible outcomes for this matchup: Tennessee, led by likely Game 1-starter Andrew Lindsey, comes out and plays to their ability, easily squashing the outmatched 49ers; or, the Volunteers come out flat on the heels of their early exit of the SEC tournament and get shocked by a hungry mid-major that has the talent to hang with the Vols.

Looking at FanDuel’s latest odds for the game, oddsmakers seem to believe the former is the more likely outcome. Tennessee is a (-280) money line favorite over Charlotte (+210) on FanDuel as of Thursday. While we agree with oddsmakers that Tennessee is more likely to win (they’d probably take seven or eight out of a hypothetical ten-game series), Charlotte may be the hungriest team in the tournament, and they have a non-zero chance of pulling off the upset. They got a taste of winning with their solid regular season and C-USA title, and they may be ready for more.

Charlotte vs. Tennessee Picks & Best Bets for Friday Featuring Charlotte

With the above analysis in mind, bettors would be wise to consider the odds for both teams entering the matchup. Tennessee is undoubtedly more likely to win, but at (-280), there’s very little profit to be had. The real question is: does Charlotte have enough of a chance to win to warrant a wager on their (+210) money line odds?

Considering the nature of the College World Series, our top Charlotte vs. Tennessee prediction is for Charlotte to upset the Vols and cash on their bettor-friendly (+210) money line odds. While we wouldn’t blame you for taking the Vols at (-280) and banking on their surplus of talent to carry them, we think there’s far more value in Charlotte’s line.

As previously mentioned, the College World Series is just as much about momentum and motivation as it is about talent. While the Vols have a clear edge in the talent department, Charlotte has a strong advantage in the areas of momentum and motivation. Don’t make the mistake of underestimating how much their program-first C-USA title means to them: there’s likely a feeling of “us against the world” in the 49ers locker room, and that type of environment can spur on some pretty miraculous Cinderella runs. If you’re a bettor looking for value (as you should be), you should strongly consider backing our top Charlotte vs. Tennessee prediction above.
