Tennessee Volunteers Football Win Total Predictions, Picks & Best Bets for 2023-24

The Tennessee football program had an elite season in 2022-23, as QB Hendon Hooker posted a 70% completion rate, 27 touchdowns and two interceptions last year. While the Vols don’t have their entire offense returning from last year, they have a lot of key pieces still in the mix. QB Joe Milton must play at his best if the Volts want to surpass nine wins, and WRs Bru McCoy and Ramel Keyton must try and replicate last year’s output from Jalin Hyatt (NFL Draft) and Cedric Tillman (NFL Draft).

The good news for the Vols' offense is that the majority of their offensive line is back, and leading RB Jaylen Wright is back. Losing Darnell Wright (NFL Draft) is huge, but John Campbell is transferring from Miami and will fill that tackle spot. Overall, we think Tennessee can rely on their run game a little more this season, and as a result, we don’t anticipate Milton and his WR corps replicating last year’s elite passing attack.

The picture isn’t as clear on the defensive side of the ball, as the Vols had a lot of turnover this offseason. Last year’s defense got a bad rap because they allowed 63 points to South Carolina and 49 to Alabama down the stretch, but they actually only allowed 27+ points three times last year. The secondary still has safety Jaylen McCollough, but the depth at the cornerback position is weak, and we think the Vols will have a tough time slowing down elite passing attacks.

Unfortunately for Tennessee, there are multiple elite passing attacks in the SEC. Additionally, they have a very difficult game in the season at Florida on September 16, which will be nationally televised on ESPN. After that game, they have a three-game home stretch against UTSA, South Carolina and #23 Texas A&M before hitting the road to take on #4 Alabama and Kentucky.

We foresee the Vols going 4-2 during that six-game stretch, which would mean they’d have to beat #1 Georgia at home on November 18 to reach 10+ wins. Therefore, our best bet using our Tennessee football predictions is for them to finish with Under 9.5 Wins (-180 at BetMGM). Although we think Milton can step up and play well, Hooker’s season was Heisman-worthy in 2022-23 before his season-ending injury, and we don’t foresee the Redshirt Senior replicating his output.
