Dan Campbell Discusses Plan For Hendon Hooker

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell joined Chris Long on the Green Light Podcast and spoke about the team selecting Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker in the NFL Draft.

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell joined Chris Long on the Green Light Podcast on Tuesday and gave his thoughts on the selection of Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker and what the future holds in the Motor City.

Campbell expects current starting quarterback Jared Goff to carry along Hendon Hooker very well. Goff has had a tumultuous NFL career thus far. He led the Los Angeles Rams to the Super Bowl in an MVP-candidate season but has since been traded and played poorly in his first season with the Lions. However, he revitalized his career during the 2022 season. As for Hooker himself, Campbell complemented his arm and his maturity. His age was a topic of concern before the NFL Draft; Hooker is 25 years old and the elder of several current NFL starters. Campbell dispelled the concerns, saying that his age was a benefit to the team brass.

While Detroit is high on Hooker, Campbell confirmed that they have no expectations for his rookie season. The head man referred to this coming season as a “redshirt year” for Hooker, considering his recent ACL injury. He will have time to learn from Goff before he gets healthy and gets his chance.

In addition to Goff, the Lions have Nate Sudfeld in their quarterback room. Adrian Martinez, formerly of Nebraska and most recently Kansas State, also signed with Detroit as an undrafted free agent after this year’s draft. Goff has a cap hit of $30 million for each of the next two seasons before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2025. If he were to be cut after this season, there would be a dead cap hit of $5 million, according to Spotrac. Nate Sudfeld will earn just over $1 million in 2023 for his one-year contract.
