Joe Milton III Improves In UTSA Win

Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Joe Milton III showed signs of progression against the UTSA Roadrunners.

On Saturday, the Tennessee Volunteers defeated the UTSA Roadrunners 45-14. The win moves Tennessee to a 3-1 record on the season. The loss for UTSA moved their record to 1-3 on the season.

After the controversy surrounding the starting quarterback position following Florida, Joe Milton III's got the start against the Roadrunners, looking to deliver a comeback win. He got the offense off to a quick start. On the first play from scrimmage, Milton scrambled left and broke through the UTSA defense for an 81-yard rushing touchdown. It gave Tennessee a lead they wouldn't give up for the rest of the game.

Milton on his run to open the game and how it affected the remainder of the afternoon: "You want to start the game fast so you can understand the flow and tempo. That has been the model since coach [Josh Heupel] has been here." When it was all said and done, he threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns on a completion rate of 58%. He was also a threat on the ground with 89 yards on the day, including the explosive touchdown that started the game.

Milton had a lot of praise for the win postgame as well. "We went back, practiced, and watched the film to understand what we were doing as an offense and how we can help it and stay on the same page." This game should give him confidence heading into the South Carolina matchup next Saturday. The Vols are now entering the beef of their SEC schedule, and the season will start to heat up. Milton looked more on his "A" game against the Roadrunners, which will be needed going forward. Milton and Tennessee will be back in action against the Gamecocks at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, September 30th.
