Ty Simpson is a different breed — that much is certain.

This week in practice, the 2022 Vols target and Mr. Football semifinalist suffered a right ankle injury, complete with three torn ligaments.

Still, Simpson rehabbed Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday night, he took the field with both cleats wrapped in tape.

With less than two minutes left in the game and his team trailing by four, Simpson avoided three would-be sacks and heaved up a prayer.

The pass was intercepted, marking the end of Westview’s season in a 21-17 win for South Gibson.

His pant leg smeared with dirt, Simpson walked around to hug teammates, apologizing profusely as he did so.

Again, this was after playing 48 minutes on a broken ankle that more closely resembled a golf ball on Wednesday.

It’s doubtful that Simpson’s leadership has ever been questioned, but that questioning would be laughable now.

After collecting himself, he talked extensively with VR2 on SI.

Simpson discussed Tennessee’s offense, his nomination as a Mr. Football semifinalist, his relationship with UT kicking commit J.T. Carver, his recruitment and much more.

But when wondering about Simpson’s grit, look no further than his heavily-wrapped right ankle.
