Former Tar Heel makes big play in Pro Football Hall of Fame Game

Chazz Surratt forces a turnover as he fights for a roster spot with the Jets.

Former UNC linebacker Chazz Surratt may have helped his chances of making an NFL roster on Thursday.

In the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game between the Jets and the Browns, Surratt snagged the only interception of the game, picking off Browns' quarterback Kellen Mond in the second quarter.

Surratt returned the interception 13 yards to the Cleveland 27-yard line. On top of his turnover, he finished the game with four solo tackles, leaving the game early due to a hamstring injury.

The Jets lost the game, 21-16.

The former standout Tar Heel started his UNC career throwing passes. As a quarterback, Surratt completed 107 attempts for 1,342 yards and eight touchdowns in his redshirt freshman year.

Surratt switched to linebacker his junior year and started in 22 games at the position. He finished his collegiate career with 116 solo tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks and two interceptions.

In 2021, the Minnesota Vikings selected Surratt in the third round with the 78th pick. After not playing any defensive snaps with the Vikings in his rookie year, he was waived on Aug. 30, 2022.

The Jets signed Surratt to their practice squad on Sept. 1, 2022, and he later signed a reserve/future contract with the team in January.

Now, he's fighting to make the final 53-man cut at the conclusion of the Jets' training camp. If he continues to make head-turning plays like the one Thursday, making the team could very well be a possibility.

UNC fans may get to see more of Surratt if he's featured in the newest season of HBO's "Hard Knocks" that will follow the Jets' training camp.

Will Surratt make the Jets' roster and have an impact on their defense this season?
