Shang Tsung Features In Mortal Kombat 1 Launch Trailer

Hype is reaching critical mass as the release date for MK1 approaches

We are a mere few days away from the launch of Mortal Kombat 1 and NRS has dropped one last trailer to remind us of all the gore-ific action to come when the game launches. While there’s been plenty of looks at the characters and story of the MK1, this final look before launch contains previews of the last few characters, Kameo’s and modes that we haven’t seen in other pieces of content, including series villain, Shang Tsung. So here’s all of what was revealed by the “launch trailer” of Mortal Kombat 1.

Shang Tsung and Reiko Get Some Shine

While we’ve seen glimpses of these two in story mode cutscenes and short battles, this is the first time we’ve gotten a good idea of how Shang Tsung and Reiko will function in the game. Tsung, who was the first-ever antagonist of Mortal Kombat, seems to be reprising his role as bad guy for this new timeline. In the story, it looks like he might be teaming up with MK11’s villain, Kronika who’s enticing the sorcerer with control and power over the realms. This comes as somewhat of a shock as Liu Kang represents the new protector of time after defeating Kronika in MK11. But in the game, Tsung has all the familiar tools he’s had in previous games including the ability to shapeshift into his opponents. Fans of him should feel right at home.

Reiko also seems to be virtually unchanged from his other iterations outside of his allegiances. Making his debut in Mortal Kombat 4, Reiko was a general of Shao Khan, who had aspirations of overthrowing him. However, in MK1 he seems to be loyal to Empress Sindel. While there’s no mention of his more duplicitous nature, his design doesn’t stray too much from his MK: Armageddon look. During matches, he’s a big brawler with slow powerful strikes that seem to do tons of damage.

Lastly, we also got a look at Mileena in matches as well. She retains much of her teleportation and ball moves which seem to specialize in juggling her opponent. Her enhanced ball move seems to create a special grab that reveals how much the Tarkantan disease has affected her.

Don’t Forget About Kon..er, Invasions.

We also got the chance to see some quick clips of the Invasion mode which seems to contain the bulk of single-player content. It takes place on a board game-style map where some of the spaces on the map send you into Mario Party-like minigames. In the vid, we see Sub-Zero dodging a number of fireballs as well as a super fast glimpse of the “Test Your Might” minigame as well.

Its SO Close

Other than those new looks we revisited some story beats between Sindel, Mileena and Kitana and saw more Sub-Zero and Scorpion teaming up. It was also the first time we saw the Shujinko Kameo, who can actually steal moves from your opponent to use against them.

All in all, it was an exciting trailer that is sure to make MK fans even more impatient as they wait for MK1’s release on September 14th.
