Super MVP Phil Simms Explains Why Michael Penix's Rocket Arm Could Be His Biggest Weakness

Does he have a point?

Washington Huskies redshirt senior quarterback Michael Penix Jr. is an elite prospect heading into next month's NFL draft. The First-Team All-American, also a two-time Second-Team All-Pac-12 and one-time Second-Team All-Big Ten honoree (he played at Indiana from 2018-21), led his Huskies all the way to the 2024 College Football Playoffs national championship game. The club lost to the Michigan Wolverines.

On the latest episode of their podcast Simms Complete, two-time Super Bowl champion former New York Giants quarterback Phil Simms and his son Matt unpacked the biggest attribute of Penix heading into the draft -- and also, to hear them break it down, the possible biggest issue in his game.

"His greatest strength, of course that's his arm," Phil Simms said. "He can make all the throws. The defense, the secondary, you better be afraid when he's on the field because he can throw it when he's being chased 65 yards like it's nothing. He can make every play there is on the field. That's his greatest strength. What's his biggest curse Matt?"

"His arm strength," Matt Simms replied.

"That's exactly right!" Phil exclaimed. "There's a curse almost. There's nothing he sees that he doesn't like. And then, 'Oh, everything opened up in front of me, I can run... well, I've got a chance, I'm going to go ahead and rip it.' So waiting on things, or somebody to come open instead of going through the read sometimes, he doesn't do that because he doesn't have to. He's looking for very small windows [which can make for riskier plays]. And he can drop his arm, he can do all that too. You name the throw, he can do that."
