Class A

No. 3 St. Cloud Cathedral 4, No. 2 Warroad 3, OT

First period

  • It took all of 26 seconds for Warroad to get on the board. Junior forward Taven James gets the rebound on a shot from senior forward Carson Pilgrim on a 2-on-2 breakaway. Warroad 1, St. Cloud Cathedral 0.
  • Warroad senior defenseman Ryan Lund pokes in his own rebound on the power play at 8:13. Senior forward Murray Marvin-Cordes with the assist. Warroad 2, St. Cloud Cathedral 0.
  • Warroad senior goalie Ben Norris with a couple big saves here with St. Cloud Cathedral on the power play. Warriors just got the kill. Still 2-0.
  • One period in the books here at the X. St. Cloud Cathedral has the slight edge in shots on goal with 12 to Warroad's nine. But the Warriors carry a 2-0 lead into the second period.

Second period

  • St. Cloud Cathedral with a nice job on the penalty kill. Just killed off back-to-back penalties that included a little 5-on-3 action. Keeps it a 2-0 game and leaves them within striking distance.
  • Back in it. St. Cloud Cathedral sophomore defenseman Griffin Sturm scores with 10 seconds left on the power play at 10:03. Junior forward Jaeger Wood with the assist from behind the net. Warroad 2, St. Cloud Cathedral 1.
  • Another big penalty kill from St. Cloud Cathedral. Even had a decent short-handed chance. Cathedral senior Nick Hansen with a couple key saves to keep it a 2-1 game.
  • And we're tied! Immediately following the kill, senior forward Cole Hwang gets a shot past Norris on a 2-on-2 rush at 14:54. Senior forward Landon Swenson with the assist. Warroad 2, St. Cloud Cathedral 2.
  • Even as can be after two periods of play. Shots are even at 18-18 and it's a 2-2 tie heading into the third. We're in for an exciting finish!

Third period

  • Warroad sophomore forward Ryan Shaugabay pokes in the rebound on the power play at 10:37. Lund fired a shot on net that stayed loose for Shagabay to tally the go-ahead goal. Goal stood after a lengthy review. St. Cloud Cathedral had just 26 seconds left to kill on a five-minute major. Warroad 3, St. Cloud Cathedral 2.
  • Hansen is off the ice for Cathedral with 1:33 to play. They're also on a power play for about 30 more seconds.
  • Incredible! With five seconds left on the power play and 1 minute, 9 seconds left in the game, junior forward John Hirschfield gets a backhanded shot past Norris to tie the game. Sturm with the assist. All tied. Warroad 3, St. Cloud Cathedral 3.
  • We're getting some extra hockey here at the X! Scoreless over the last 1:09. Warroad has a 32-22 edge in shots on goal.

Overtime

  • Hirschfield again! Incredible. He scores the tying goal late in the third period and the winner in overtime at 3:53. Andrew Dwinnell with the assist. What a game. Cathedral is headed to the championship. St. Cloud Cathedral 4, Warroad 3.
  • St. Cloud Cathedral coach Robbie Stocker: "That was probably the craziest game I've ever been a part of, very fun."

No. 1 Hermantown 7, No. 4 Mahtomedi 6, OT

First period

  • Hermantown junior forward River Freeman gets the scoring started with a goal at 6:30. Senior forward Evan Gunderson and senior defenseman Drew Nelson with the assists. Hermantown 1, Mahtomedi 0.
  • Another one for the Hawks. Junior defenseman Jack Slattengren fires a backhander from the side of the net past Mahtomedi junior Wes Strub for an unassisted goal at 10:49. Hermantown 2, Mahtomedi 0.
  • Hawks with another quick strike. Freeman fired a shot off the pad of Strub and sophomore AJ Francisco was right there on the rebound for a goal at 11:13. Junior defenseman Henry Peterson also with an assist for the Hawks. Hermantown 3, Mahtomedi 0.
  • It's already getting out of hand here. Hawks senior defenseman Weston Bohlman with a snipe at 16:16. Freeman with the assist. Sophomore forward Bradford Skytta should almost be credited with one, too, for blocking Strub's vision and staying in front of the net. Hermantown 4, Mahtomedi 0.
  • The Zephyrs have their work cut out for them if they want to get back into this one. First period was all Hawks, who have a 16-5 edge on shots on goal and a 4-0 lead heading into the second frame.

Second period

  • Zephyrs seem to have settled down. Spending more time in their zone. Still haven't had too many good chances. Hawks still up 4-0 with 9:34 left in the period.
  • And the Zephyrs are on the board. Junior defenseman Sam Harris with a snipe from the left circle at 8:25. Senior forward Max Strecker and junior forward Winston Wright with the assists. Hermantown 4, Mahtomedi 1.
  • Zephyrs with another good rush at the Hermantown net. Senior Dane Callaway sprawling and stretching out to keep the puck out. Little chippy with officials separating the players in front of the net.
  • Another one for the Zephyrs! Senior forward Jake Hodd-Chlebeck fired a shot from the right circle that bounced off Callaway and into the net for a power-play goal at 10:05. Harris on the assist. Hermantown 4, Mahtomedi 2.
  • And the Hawks answer right back! Francisco from the top of the right circle that gets into the top-left corner of the net to beat senior Charlie Brandt, who came out to start the second period, at 10:37. Freeman and Peterson with the assists. Hermantown 5, Mahtomedi 2.
  • Huge save from Brandt on a Grade-A Hermantown chance with just over a minute left in the period. If the Zephyrs make this interesting, that save will be a crucial reason why.
  • Huge save then a huge goal. Senior forward Patrick Egan gets one past Callaway from in front of the net at 16:08. Senior defenseman Wyatt Tarnowski and Wright on the assists. We've got a game! Hermantown 5, Mahtomedi 3.
  • Totally different period from the first. The Zephyrs kept the puck in their zone and cut their deficit in half. Still a lot of work to do, but they gave themselves a chance. Outshot the Hawks 15-9 in the period. Hermantown has a 25-20 edge in shots on goal for the game. Should be a fun third here at the X!

Third period

  • Big save from Callaway to start the third. Hard shot on net from the Zephyrs.
  • Wow! Tarnowski gets one in from just inside the blue line at 2:54. Callaway never saw it. Jimmy Egan and Patrick Egan with the assists. Hermantown 5, Mahtomedi 4.
  • Incredible move from Francisco going left to right to beat Brandt in front of the net for an unassisted goal at 5:41. That's a hat trick for Francisco and it gives the Hawks a two-goal cushion. Hermantown 6, Mahtomedi 4.
  • The Zephyrs are making it really interesting! With just 1 minute, 52 seconds to play, Harris fires one in from beyond the top of the left circle. Jimmy Egan and Hodd-Chlebeck with the assists. Hermantown 6, Mahtomedi 5.
  • And we've got a tie game! With 50.2 seconds on the clock, Harris finds the equalizer, tipping in Cole Swanson's shot from above the left circle. That's Harris' third of the night. Strecker also with an assist. Zephyrs with a huge rally to tie this back up. Hermantown 6, Mahtomedi 6.
  • Plenty of extra hockey for the fans here at the X, as this one's headed to OT, too. Harris and Francisco both with hat tricks in this one. What a rally from Mahtomedi, finding two goals with an extra skater in the last two minutes. Having a feeling we're in for a wild finish now, too.

Overtime

  • With 48.5 seconds left in overtime, Freeman nets the winner! Francisco with the assist on the game-winning goal on a day he posted a hat trick. Incredible, incredible game. The Hawks will face St. Cloud Cathedral on Saturday in the championship game. Hermantown 7, Mahtomedi 6.

  • And another! Cowan finds the back of the net at 15:20. Senior defenseman Barrett Dexheimer and Peckman with the assists. Edina 4, Grand Rapids 0.

Second period

  • A calmer second period of hockey at the X. Neither team finds the back of the net in the middle frame. Grand Rapids has its work cut out for it in the third period if it hopes to get back into this one. Edina up 22-12 on shots on goal.

Third period

  • Cowan with a power-play goal for the Hornets at 6:23. Dexheimer and West with the assists. Edina is well on its way to the state championship. Edina 5, Grand Rapids 0.

  • Another one for Grand Rapids! Senior forward Jacob Garski scores unassisted on the power play at 11:36. They'll need a few more, and fast, to force overtime, but back-to-back goals now. Edina 5, Grand Rapids 2.
  • And that's a wrap! Edina advances to the championship game, where it'll play Chanhassen on Saturday. Should be an interesting matchup with both teams winning handily on Friday.
