BREAKING: Memphis Grizzlies Reportedly Release 6-Year NBA Player

According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Memphis Grizzlies will waive Chimezie Metu.

UPDATE: Chimezie Metu has been officially waived.

On Thursday, the Memphis Grizzlies acquired Chimezie Metu as part of a three-team trade with the Brooklyn Nets and Phoenix Suns.

Metu had been averaging 5.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per contest while shooting 50.8% from the field and 29.4% from the three-point range in 37 games (five starts) with the Suns.

However, Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reports that the Grizzlies will waive Metu.

Via Scotto: "The Memphis Grizzlies are waiving Chimezie Metu, league sources told @hoopshype."

Metu was the 49th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft out of USC and is in his sixth season in the league.

Before joining the Suns, he had spent two seasons with the San Antonio Spurs and three with the Sacramento Kings.

The 26-year-old has career averages of 5.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest while shooting 49.4% from the field and 29.7% from the three-point range in 246 regular season games.

He also appeared in three NBA playoff games with the Kings last season.

Once Metu clears waivers, he could be an intriguing veteran for a contending team's bench and will be a name to watch.

As for the Grizzlies, they are the 13th seed in the Western Conference with an 18-34 record in 52 games.

They are 3-7 over their last ten games and in the middle of a seven-game losing streak.

Most recently, the Grizzlies lost to the Chicago Bulls by a score of 118-110.

Following the Bulls, they will visit the Charlotte Hornets on Saturday evening in North Carolina.
