Cleveland Cavaliers Sign Former NBA 1st Round Pick

The Cleveland Cavaliers have signed a new player.

Zhaire Smith last appeared in an NBA game during the 2019-20 season and has been currently playing in the G League for the Cleveland Charge.

In 17 regular season games, he has averaged 12.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, and 1.2 steals per contest while shooting 56.5% from the field and 45.1% from the three-point range.  

On Sunday afternoon, the Cleveland Cavaliers announced that they are signing Smith to a ten-day deal.

Smith played his college basketball for Texas Tech and was the 16th pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.  

He spent two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers and has career averages of 3.7 points and 1.2 rebounds per contest while shooting 37.8% from the field and 31.6% from the three-point range in 13 games. 

The 24-year-old has also played in two NBA playoff games. 

Over the offseason, Smith signed a deal with the Cavs, but he was waived before the regular season (he appeared in three preseason games).  

Smith has also played in 16 G League Showcase Cup games this season and averaged 12.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.3 steals per contest while shooting 52.2% from the field and 35.4% from the three-point range. 

As for the Cavs, they are in the middle of a fantastic season and are the second seed in the Eastern Conference with a 35-16 record in 51 games. 

They are in the middle of a nine-game winning streak and will host the 76ers on Monday evening.
