F1 News: Emilia Romagna Track Forced To  Evacuate As Flood Risk Worsens Ahead Of Imola GP

Formula 1 personnel were asked to leave the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix paddock due to heavy rain and flood concerns, emphasising the priority placed on safety in the face of challenging weather conditions.

Ahead of the highly anticipated Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, Formula 1 personnel were unexpectedly asked to fully evacuate the track due to mounting concerns over heavy rain and flooding in the Imola region. Italian authorities had already issued flood and landslide warnings for the area, which has been grappling with relentless rainfall in recent weeks.

As the water levels in the nearby Santerno river began to rise, a precautionary decision was made shortly before 4pm local time on Tuesday, urging all individuals present in the paddock to vacate for the remainder of the day. The safety of everyone involved was paramount, given the unpredictable nature of the weather conditions.

The inclement weather is expected to persist throughout Tuesday and most of Wednesday, with a slight reprieve anticipated in the early hours of Thursday. The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, set to host the drivers' media availabilities on Thursday, will witness F1 personnel resuming their activities as the situation improves.

The region has already experienced devastating consequences due to heavy rainfall, with two individuals tragically losing their lives earlier in May. This prompted the evacuation of numerous residents from their homes, further highlighting the severity of the situation.

AlphaTauri, one of Formula 1's Italy-based teams along with Ferrari, expressed solidarity with the affected area. In a statement, they conveyed their support to the city of Faenza, home to their Scuderia AlphaTauri factory, and other parts of the Emilia Romagna region.

The statement read:

"Our thoughts are with them and everyone affected during this difficult time. We stand together as a community and extend our support to those impacted by the violent rainstorm, which resulted in heavy flooding and severe damage in Faenza and surrounding areas."

As Formula 1 continues to prioritize the well-being of its personnel and the local community, further assessments will be made to ensure the safety and smooth operation of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
