Key Takeaways

  • Fernando Alonso extends his Aston Martin contract through 2026, coinciding with Honda becoming the team's engine supplier.
  • Alonso expresses a significant concern over missing family time due to his racing commitments, prompting a flexible, year-by-year decision-making approach.

Fernando Alonso, the seasoned Formula 1 driver, recently announced his contract extension with Aston Martin, ensuring his presence in the sport through 2025 and 2026. This commitment comes at a pivotal time as Aston Martin prepares to welcome Honda as their engine supplier in the coming seasons. Despite his enthusiasm for his continued involvement in F1, Alonso shared a personal dilemma that had him contemplating his future in racing.

"I feel I love racing too much to stop now," Alonso stated. His devotion to the sport is evident as he speaks about balancing the rigorous demands of training and maintaining peak physical condition.

"The sacrifices are smaller than the fun and passion I have. I breathe Formula 1 and train and eat to be fit enough. At the moment there is no need to change my lifestyle because I live a fantastic lifestyle.

"I love the sport and wouldn't like to have to watch Formula 1 races at home from the couch. I still feel like I have to participate, improve here and there and get faster in certain areas."

Alonso's career, which spans over two decades, is not without its sacrifices, particularly when it comes to family time. The two-time world champion admitted that missing out on everyday family moments was a significant concern as he considered his options.

"My biggest concern was that I would miss my family too much and not have a normal life with them," Alonso revealed. To mitigate this, he has adopted a flexible approach, taking decisions "year by year and month by month," after thorough discussions with his family.

This dialogue with his loved ones has led to a positive turn, with more family members attending races.

"They come to races more often. For example, everyone comes to the Miami Grand Prix: my mother, my sister and my two nieces," he shared. "We decide together and have some changes planned, also for the things I miss. I think that we have all drawn those conclusions."

As Alonso prepares for another competitive stint with Aston Martin and the upcoming partnership with Honda's engines, his focus remains on refining his performance. "I still feel like I have to participate, improve here and there and get faster in certain areas," he said.
