"They all say they are improving but there is no guarantee that it is going to happen. Aston Martin learned a lot from last year but while they understand they have actually got to make it work on the track.
"That is the hard thing and where they are all going to have an issue. Does a team have the understanding to actually make their car better than Red Bull? It is a time for positive vibes but also some disappointment. No-one really knows where they are at."
The former driver continued:
"A lot of the hard work has been done using all the technology teams have at the factories. They will feel they have made advances but it is only when you put the wheels on the circuit and test that you find out whether that confidence is justified.
"I remember one season Jenson Button and Ross Brawn didn’t appreciate where they were, but as soon as they went on to the circuit they were both confused and delighted at how well they were going.
"So, you do get surprises. It is a good feeling this time of year but there is still uncertainty until they get on to the track. Until that point, they cannot guarantee that the care is even going to be drivable. You have seen that with the Mercedes."
