F1 News: Max Verstappen Takes Canadian Grand Prix Pole Position After Chaotic Qualifying

The results of the Canadian Grand Prix qualifying session.

Max Verstappen has taken pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix.

Following the Red Bull driver tomorrow will be Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso who will start from second and third, respectively.

Alfa Romeo had a less than ideal start to qualifying as Zhou Guanyu came over his team radio straight away saying that he had no drive. He managed to get part way round the track before being forced to stop. A red flag was put on the session, however, the Chinese driver managed to get the car going again and got back to the pits so the session was not delayed too much.

With 14 minutes left of Q1, the Swiss-based team worked exceptionally hard to get Guanyu back out to get a time on the board. Luckily, he was able to get back out as the session resumed.

As rain began to fall we saw a few cars spinning off the track but no crashes, thankfully.

Out in Q1

  1. Yuki Tsunoda
  2. Pierre Gasly
  3. Nyck de Vries
  4. Logan Sargeant
  5. Zhou Guanyu

Alex Albon put in some great lap times after going straight out on soft tyres whereas the rest went out on intermediates. As the session continued, the rain began to fall again.

Out in Q2

  1. Charles Leclerc
  2. Sergio Perez
  3. Lance Stroll
  4. Kevin Magnussen
  5. Valtteri Bottas

It continued to rain into Q3 prompting all drivers to go for intermediate tyres in their battle for pole position. Max Verstappen managed to get out first and used it to his advantage to put in a great time before the rain became heavier.

Oscar Piastri crashed into the wall after Turn 7 with seven minutes to go putting another red flag on the session.

When the session resumed, the rain was so much heavier that the drivers returned to the pits.
